For school, I had to create an interactive experience within a cube that conveyed a specific theme. For this project, I chose to center it around Laika, one of the first animals in space. Her story inspired me deeply, how a dog from the streets could go on to make such a huge impact on the world. It will forever remain a tragic story that I will never forget.
Since this project is a physical installation incorporating AR and VR, it is difficult to fully capture the experience digitally. However, I will do my best to explain the journey using pictures, GIFs, and links to the VR experience.
Project made in 2024 by myselfThe journey begins with users encountering a rocket, immediately sparking their curiosity. As they approach, they find four QR codes, numbered 1-3, with an additional "extra info" code.
Scanning the first QR code takes the user to an AR app with an on-screen prompt to find a flat surface. Once detected, a 3D model of Laika appears, excitedly talking about her final centrifuge training. She expresses her happiness that the user is keeping her safe and her excitement for what’s ahead.
Laika then asks the user to push a button to start her final centrifuge training.
On the left is what the user sees in AR. Once they press on the Laika via their screen she will talk to them.
On the right is the button push that sends Laika on her last centrifuge ride as seen on the top of the rocket.
Moving on to the second QR code, the user enters another AR experience. This time, they must locate a specific anchor point, the image of Laika on the rocket. Once scanned, Laika virtually emerges from the rocket, visible through the phone screen.
She talks about feeling both excited and nervous for her mission, hoping everything will go well and that she will see the user again soon. Before launching, she asks for one last head pat. The user then presses the button, initiating a countdown (3...2...1) followed by a rumbling launch sound.
On the left the AR version of Laika popping out of the rocket when the second QR code is scanned.
On the right it shows the moment the launch button is pressed, triggering takeoff.
The final step of the experience is Laika’s actual flight. Scanning the third QR code transports the user to a VR experience that immerses them in Laika’s final moments, conveyed through sound and visuals.

This project was one of my favorite pieces to work on. It was an emotional journey both for me and for the users. Unfortunately, you can't experience it physically, as the hands-on version creates a much more cohesive and impactful experience.
This project was also showcased at Night of the Nerds, where I was invited to present a second time though, due to time constraints, I had to decline.
Rest in peace Laika 3 November 1957
